I received my First Communion and Conformation at STA and I was also an Altar Boy. Father Bynes was my favorite priest. He would come out and play stick ball with us . Both of my older sisters were married at STA. And Monsignor Walsh officiated each wedding. It is still a very beautiful church. Back in the 1950's and 1960's it was a great neighborhood to raise a family. Have many good memories Mulry said: May 24th, 2014 5:49 pm So many memories. Graduated in 1963. Great School then taught by the Madames of the Sacred Heart of Mary. Magnificent Sanctuary!! Ten of us kids hung out and every two weeks we all marched up to Confession. Good kids! 51 years a priest-20 as an Army Airborne Chaplain. Abundant blessings on you all! Justin Jacobs wrote on 2016 Hello from Melbourne, Australia to Fr. Librado, Fr. Jeff, Maria Cosme, Isabel, and to all of my beautiful friends from the congregation at St. Thomas Aquinas in the Bronx. I just wanted to say that I think of you all so often and with great love in my heart. I miss you terribly. God bless you all. Love to you, from Justin (organist and cantor, 2014-2015). My uncle, Rev. Daniel J. Sullivan, served this church before his death on January 30, 1941. He officiated at the marriage of my parents, Edward Sullivan and Clare Frey on September 7, 1932 at St. Thomas Aquinas. Father Dan also lay in repose at the St. Thomas Aquinas rectory followed by Divine Office and Requiem Mass. I am doing genealogy research and want to find our more about Father Dan. My parents and aunts and uncles also attended STA. I have to say that the education was outstanding! My education there prepared me for the rest of my life. Back then all the nuns wore habits, I always wondered if they had hair...lol. The pastor was Monsignor Walsh. I really loved going to that school. I also went to Catholic high school, St Pius V, a small all girls high school. Thank you STA |

To me it was like Cathedral walking down the long center isle looking at the white marble alter. I was also an alter boy from 1960 to 1965 and after learning the Latin, they switch to English. But I have a lot of memories of growing up in the neighborhood especially around the Christmas season with the church. |
Posted: 10/25/2008 8:19:46 PM Message From: Marion Barus Comments: I attended Saint Thomas Aquinas Grammar School as a child from 1947-1954. I recieved my First Communion and Confirmation, starred in or supported all the Christmas plays, sang ib the Children`s Choir, bought, or rather my parents bought , raffles for all those Bazaars, went to CYO on Friday nights ( as briefly as that lasted), had my Graduation ceremony in the Church proper, and was even later married there. At the time my family and I were parishiners, St. Thomas boasted a mostly Irish/German/Italian working class demographic. The school, having been founded by Mother Joseph Butler in the early 20th century, was old by the time I started first grade but still hanging on when i graduated in 1954. It is an interesting fact that Mother Butler is my Grandfather Michael Butler`s first cousin, something I found out many years after leaving STA. Anyway, attending the school afforded me an enjoyable and enlightened academic experience...... Later I continued at the Academy of the Sacred Heart of Mary at Marmion Ave. Also, under the guidence of the same dear RSHM sisters, or, should I say Madams and Mothers as they were referred to at that time. I return infrequently to visit the Church I grew up in, but when I do, it is with great fondness. |

I lived there from 1955 to 1968, I graduated from St. Thomas Aquinas Grammar School in June 1965 and I also attended church services at St. Thomas all the years I lived there. I received my First Communion and Conformation and I was also an Alter Boy until in graduated in 1965. Both of my sister’s were married at St. Thomas, my sister Kay in 1959 and my sister Marge in 1962. When my sister Marge was married in 62’, it was the last marriage performed by Monsignor Walsh. It was a great church to belong too and a great neighborhood to grow up in. I did stop by to visit in the summer of 2005 before I moved to Atlanta. There were some changes on the outside of the church, but the inside still looked the same as I remember it. The neighborhood also changed and all of the old apartment buildings were gone except for the building I lived in, it was still there which was nice to see it still standing. |

I attended both school and church at St. Anthony`s on Noble Ave./Mansion Street. It`s been some years since I`ve attended church in general, so I am eager and happy to start back at St. Thomas. |
